What Is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic
is a science, art and philosophy that emphasizes the bodies' inborn or innate ability to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery. Instead of covering up symptoms with drugs, Chiropractors look to correct the cause.

Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that the nervous system controls the function of every cell, tissue, organ and system of the body. The 24 moving vertebrae which house the spinal cord, can become misaligned. When these bones lose their normal motion or position, they can irritate the nervous system, thereby, disrupting the normal function of cells, tissue, organs - the entire body. This is termed "vertebral subluxation." The science of Chiropractic is locating these areas of spinal dysfunction and correcting them.

Chiropractic comes from the Greek word chiropraktikos, meaning "effective treatment by hand." The art of Chiropractic is in the correcting of vertebral subluxation, specific spinal adjustments. Gentle spinal adjustments can consist of a quick movement, a slow direct pressure to the spinal bone, and some Chiropractors use small tools to gently move the vertebrae. (And no, it is not usually painful!) There are many different "adjusting" techniques to restore spinal bones to a more normal position and function. Chiropractors spend years of training perfecting their technique of spinal adjustment.

Chiropractic has always been and continues to be based on the philosophy that doctors do not heal. Only the body heals itself. The Chiropractors job is to remove any interference from the nervous system to allow the bodies own inborn, innate healing ability. "The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the causes and prevention of disease." - Thomas A. Edison
